I’m happy to announce that the Sacred Harp Singing School I taught at Bennington College this fall will continue in the Spring as a full-semester course. The weekly class will feature instruction in the practice, traditions, and history of Sacred Harp singing.
Once again I’ll be at Bennington as a visiting singing master. Bennington College students can register for the class for credit, but the singing schools will be open to the general public as well.
The course is listed on the Bennington College web site, and you can contact me for more information as well.
I’ve recently added descriptions, photographs, and recordings of several projects of mine from the past few years to this site. Visit the Artworks and Compositions section of the site to learn about these recent works. Added projects include:
This fall I’ll be teaching a class on Sacred Harp singing at Bennington College in Bennington Vermont as a visiting singing master at the college.
The course will have an enrollment of 30-40 undergraduates, but is open to the public as well, so this is a great opportunity to learn about Sacred Harp singing for anybody in the area.
Please contact me for more information.
Lauren and I will be traveling to Potsdam, NY later this month to teach a two-day Sacred Harp singing school. We’ve been invited by the Potsdam Community Chorus and the Crane School of Music and will be teaching a variety of sessions for the community, the choral group, and Potsdam students.
Please contact me for more information.
This October I will serve as Chairman of the 21st annual New York State Sacred Harp Singing Convention, a two day-long event featuring food, fellowship, and singing from the Sacred Harp songbook. The Convention is hosted each year by a Sacred Harp singing community in New York, and this year marks the first time it will be held in Eastern New York.
The convention will take place on October 17-18 at Hubbard Hall in Cambridge, NY. Housing is available for out of town guests, and the event is free and open to all. More information is on the New York State Convention web site.
I’m happy to announce the publication of the 2nd edition of the Subliminal History of New York State: Route of Progress tunebook. Published by the Society of Subliminal State, this book features 53 original shape note compositions, with music written by me and lyrics by Carrie Dashow. I designed the book, and Carrie Dashow wrote the book’s words and contributed the illustrations.
For this new edition, roughly 20 songs have been improved or corrected, and the introductions and rudiments of music sections have been updated.
You can order copies of the book for $20 through the Society for a Subliminal State store. Read more about the tunebook in the artworks and compositions section of this site.
